Abused Wife Syndrome- Day 1 of 48 Days to Work You Love

This is the first section of the book that really spoke to me. Miller explains that many people leave a bad job to seek more fulfilling work but then get pulled back into a similar position because the desire for financial security. A few you are familiar with this story. Early in my time in Atlanta, I was hired to work in marketing for a small company that completely abused their employees. It was nothing for someone to get assigned a useless but detailed set of tasks and then get yelled at when they weren’t completed to spec. And when I say yelled at, I don’t mean that person was privy to an excitable reaction or got fussed at a little, I mean screaming. When I started, I didn’t experience this, but over time the reactions to work that was less than perfect would get sterner and snippier. Then one Friday, when I least expected it, I got a phone call. Apparently, I didn’t apply enough pressure to a co-worker to pass on the info necessary to write an article. I was yelled at and cursed on the phone for about five minutes. I determined, at that point, that the next time this happened. I was going to quit. It took three days for that promise to be put to the test.I came into a meeting and realized that I didn’t have a sheet of paper with articles ideas that were supposed to be discuss. Later, I found out that the paper fell out of my bag in the car. At this point, the discovery that I didn’t have the memo ignited an intense and angry reaction, in which I was cursed at and eventually left standing alone in an empty office. He stormed out of the door, got into his car and sped off. I quit that night.Fast forward a year, after covering high school sports, traveling around Georgia to follow world-class cyclists and interviewing breast cancer survivors, I needed money and the angry boss came along at the right time. I didn’t have the patience to wait for these other opportunities to become more lucrative. I wanted the comfort of a big paycheck more than I wanted to be true to myself  and what God blessed me with.I haven’t been yelled at but I have had tense moments, seen others treated poorly and felt a lot of stress. Obviously, not worth it. The next time I have to choose between work I love and high-paying work, if I have to make that choice, I'll choose differently.
